Singing in the choir

This fall we decided to do something different and sing in the choir at our church. What a joy to participate in the Christmas season drama with choir. We met new people and enjoyed worshiping our Lord and Saviour. We also sang at the transition service for Pastor Luis Estevez, stepping down after 23 years as senior pastor. An event of mixed emotions for a much loved pastor.

Volcano Cotopaxi is active again

October 21, 2022, the volcano Cotopaxi has an emission of gas and some ash. Over the past couple of months, there have been a few more explosions of ash. While the amount of ash has not been much, it has been enough to cause problems for the agriculture and cattle sectors.

Translating for a medical brigade...

In March, we made time to translate for a team that came down from the U.S.A. to do a medical brigade for the poorer people. Most of the doctors and nurses didn't know Spanish, although a few were quite quick on picking things up. Over the four days of attending patients, about 800 people were seen and helped. Many, apart from their medical issues, wanted prayer and spiritual counselling.

God's Plan

Over the past several years, we have been helping New Foundations International translate several discipleship books into Spanish. It has been a real joy for us to participate in this work. This past December (2021), Tim Bunn (the author), Sherman and Tom were in Quito to participate in some of the groups that have been using the books. While they were here, we enjoyed some fellowship time over breakfast.

Here are the four books that have been translated into Spanish and a host of other languages. If you want to download the books, you may do so from the website newfoundationsinternational.org. These books don't introduce anything new, they just take the reader to the Bible to see what God had written down.

God's Plan for His Church -- the first book that we translated and formatted (216 pages).

God's Plan for His Disciples -- This book has been
printed over 7,000 times for use throughout Latin America.

God's Plan for Young Disciples -- Teachers Guide and Workbook
Use simpler language and more visuals for a younger audience.

The discipleship books look at 14 aspects of the faith and take the reader to the Bible to discover what the God has to say about each topic. There is plenty of room for writing observations, what one has learned, and how one can apply what the Bible states about each topic.

Check them out. They are available in English PDF files. If you want to see them in other languages, please email nfi@newfoundationsinternational.org

The right to repair

Well, it's actually more than just a right to fight for, it makes a lot of economic sense. We've had and 18" computer monitor for probably 15 years and it would turn on for about 1 second and then turn off. If I kept trying, eventually (maybe after 10 minutes) it would stay on and I could use the computer.

I finally had enough and started investigating as to what the problem could be. Many blogs on the internet pointed me to some bad capacitors in the power supply.  I opened up the monitor with a bit of dread and found that yes, there were three capacitors which seemed to have reached their end-of-life. I went on a search to find the components to replace them and eventually ended up spending $2.80 on the replacement parts.

Thirty minutes later, I had a working monitor. I felt rather pleased with the results!

Strange weather

This is downtown Quito. Rain can be a common occurrence, but hail is quite rare. This afternoon was cool and saw a fair bit of hail fall. The rain didn't stop that afternoon. For a Canuck, it was "cool" to see the white stuff again (even if it was hail).

Senior year

Joshua and his classmates pose for a senior year class portrait. It was a time where the school celebrates the oath to the flag of Ecuador and honors the scholastic achievement of the students.
